Most traumatic brain injuries result from sudden, external impacts on the brain, which can be caused for several reasons. “Traumatic Brain Injury” is a broader term used to define injuries that happen to the brain and is also one of the most common causes of disability and death.

Did you know the most common cause of a traumatic brain injury is by something as simple as a fall? This is closely followed by being struck by an object and traffic accidents.

  1. Falls – it is one of the most common causes of traumatic brain injury. As per a study report, one in five falls causes severe damage such as broken bones or a head injury, where approximately three quarters require hospital admission. It is seen that falls are more common in children and older adults.
  2. Motor vehicle accidents – car accidents are also one of the most common causes of TBI and one of the biggest reasons for TBI-related deaths. The WHO predicts that by 2030, Road Traffic Accidents will become the seventh leading cause of death, increasing from 2.5% in 2015 to 2.6% in 2030.
  3. Industrial accidents – industrial sites such as construction, agriculture, forestry etc., are highly hazard-prone and have been a leading cause of brain injuries due to tripping on tools, electric wires, or falling through open spaces.
  4. Violence and assault – any severe blow to the head can cause a brain injury and lead to disastrous outcomes. A lot of times, women subjected to domestic violence end up with disabling brain injuries. Similarly, people involved in violent situations often end up with brain injuries that leave them temporarily or permanently disabled.
  5. Sports-related injury – people playing contact sports such as boxing, soccer, hockey, baseball etc., are highly susceptible to brain injuries that can have a long-term impact on their lives.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), around 250,000 people are hospitalized for TBI, and over 50,000 die from brain injuries annually. Brain injuries can leave victims and their families devastated and hopeless, but engaging with a trustworthy attorney who will fight for you and get justice is essential.
