Be mindful of these common injuries suffered at a construction site!

The construction industry is an essential pillar of any economy. Given the growing need for physical infrastructure, the industry is bound for exponential growth in the coming years, generating significant employment opportunities for people. While it remains an exciting industry to work for, construction sites pose severe hazards for construction workers.

Construction workers face the risk of injury almost every day, and some injuries can have life-long consequences; hence, it is imperative to be mindful of some of the typical construction site injuries and what to do in case of an injury.

Some of the most common injuries are:

  1. Concussion – blunt force trauma injury is one of the most common injuries at a construction site. This includes being struck in the head from a falling object or hitting your head during a fall. They can result in minor or, in some cases, severe concussions, resulting in a need for immediate medical care.
  2. Spinal injury – neck and back injuries can be fatal, resulting in partial or complete paralysis or lifelong disabilities. They are common at construction sites, mainly for people working at great heights, as there is a higher risk of falling.
  3. Burns & fractures – given the nature of work, burns and fractures are also a common cause of injury at construction sites. Workers work with heavy machinery, exposed wires, and sometimes even leaking pipes, thus becoming a massive threat for an explosion or fractures.
  4. Loss of hearing is primarily related to exposure to heavy machinery at construction sites and noise. Construction workers are at the site for at least eight to ten hours, and constant loud noises can lead to gradual loss of hearing.
  5. Stress injuries occur due to repetitive tasks that can potentially cause damage to the back, shoulders, knees, and hands. Constant bending, lifting weight, and moving are the common reasons for stress injuries. If left unchecked, it can turn into something permanent; thus, no matter how minor the damage is, it needs medical attention.
